Background and matching gift We are most grateful for ongoing support of the center through membership. Membership contributions are the foundation of our yearly budget. These gifts alone, however, do not fully cover our budgetary needs, and it is necessary for us to have one additional appeal each year. The focus of the annual appeal depends on the kinds of expenses we have at the time.
We need to raise $ 30,000 to balance our budget and enable us to make these building-related changes. Fortunately, we have a matching gift of $15,000, so that any contribution you make will in effect be doubled.
How your contribution will be used: sidewalks, sewer, and 3rd floor renovations This year, we are asking you to help us make some important repairs to our practice home: a sidewalk assessment, a sewer repair, and the much-needed restoration of our dear but tired third floor space. The first two repairs mentioned are clearly vital for safety and function. I’d like to share a little more about the third floor changes, since they impact programming in exciting ways.
Restoring the 3rd floor When we did our major building renovation a few years ago, there were not enough funds to address the third floor space. Now, five years later, this part of our building requires our attention, starting with the replacement of sub-flooring and flooring, moving on to the walls, windows, and bathroom.
There are four main ways in which the third floor supports our programming. With your generosity, these four uses could be greatly enhanced, assuring us of a solid, usable space for many years to come. The third floor space will:
1.) Provide better housing for visiting teachers, such as nuns from Asia who will soon be in residence with us. In the past few years MZMC has made a series of remarkable contacts with Buddhists from Vietnam, China, and Japan. These contacts have done much to bring diverse points of view and practices to the community.

2.) Ensure a more welcoming space for our programming for children and teens, which uses both rooms on the third floor. Such programming encourages age diversity in our community, bringing in young parents as well as their children.
3.) Provide better office space for our administrative staff and quiet space for various meetings, classes, and dokusan.
4.) Repair and update our third-floor restroom, which is a great help for all of the offerings mentioned above. We need to raise $ 30,000 to balance our budget and enable us to make these building-related changes. Fortunately, we have a matching gift of $15,000 from an anonymous donor, so that any contribution you make will in effect be doubled. If 100 people were able to contribute $150 each, and then add in the match, we would meet our goal.
Living a life in the dharma is, of course, all about people. These changes will improve the experience of visiting practitioners, families, our hardworking staff, and all of us. Your contribution will help us to maximize the use of our building at a time when we have more practitioners than we have ever had before. It will help us to foster an environment that enriches our practice by putting people first. A deep bow of gratitude to you for your consideration!
