Creativity and Zen
Zen and Creativity: Writing as Buddhist Practice
with Ted O'Toole
Wednesday evenings, July 9 - August 13
7:15 - 8:45 pm
Foundations of Practice Class
Offered in person and online.
This class is about awakening through creative writing: about opening up to that moment when writing simply occurs and the true nature of things becomes manifest. We will explore such techniques as telling our own spiritual stories, stream-of-consciousness writing, haiku, deep listening, and writing with the aid of random elements. The emphasis will be on process, not product. Classes will consist of talks about writing as zen practice, in-class writing (in the zendo or outdoors) with the aid of prompts and exercises, and sharing what we've written with both small and large groups. No experience with zen practice or creative writing is necessary!

A Note About Donation-only Programming
Following the Buddhist tradition of dana, or giving, MZMC offers all of our programs on a donation basis. We offer a suggested donation amount to help people understand the average amount we hope to receive to continue to make these offerings. We encourage those with more capacity for giving to make a donation above the suggested amount to support those who need to give a smaller amount.
