Initiation 2026
Initiation 2026
The precept study sessions are offered annually in the spring. They will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Sundays 3/29, 4/26, 5/24, 6/28, 7/26, and 8/23. Sessions will be offered in person and online and will be recorded for those who need to miss one or two.
Sewing a rakusu has always been part of initiation at MZMC. Sewing will occur in person and online with Keidō Thotland most Sundays 11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. and Mondays 7:00-8:30 p.m. If you’d like to be initiated in 2026, there will be a required sewing meeting in early spring, date is TBD. In order to sew the rakusu, initiates should plan to spend an equal amount of time sewing on their own as they do in class. It takes many weeks to sew a rakusu. Please consider committing to weekly attendance at the Sunday or Monday times. Tomoe Katagiri said, “...when you continue with the stitching you will have many problems. Experience. Yes. That is your life…”
The 2026 Initiation ceremony will occur September 12th, 7:00 - 9:00 p.m.
COST: The suggested donation to MZMC for participating in initiation is $165 or $200 for folks attending sewing instruction online. The larger suggested donation for online folks is to cover the expenses of sending materials back and forth. In addition, dana for the sewing teacher is expected. The recommended range of dana for sewing a rakusu is $100 - $400.
