Active Hope and Mindful Meditation: A Response to Our Environmental Crisis
In-person, two-day workshop cosponsored by Twin Cities Work That Reconnects and the Minnesota Zen Meditation Center.
WHEN: Saturday, May 3, 12:00 - 5:00 pm and Sunday, May 4, 1:00 - 5:00 pm
WHERE: MZMC, 3343 E. Bde Maka Ska Parkway, Minneapolis 55408
This Active Hope workshop is based on the work of Joanna Macy, a Budddhist scholar, eco-philosopher, and activist who has inspired thousands from around the world to maintain Active Hope in light of our current environmental crisis. Through reflections, experiential exercises, and mindfulness practices, this workshop is designed to build our capacity and stamina to fully engage in the healing of our world. We are living in a time of incredible disruption and uncertainty. Active Hope is the process of determining the future we want and taking actions that contribute to that future, thus becoming part of what Macy calls the Great Turning. In this workshop, we will use the Work That Reconnects Spiral to guide our work:
- Grounding ourselves in GRATITUDE and building up resilience as we do so
- Creating space to HONOR OUR PAIN for the world
- Gaining inspiration through SEEING WITH NEW AND ANCIENT EYES
- Creating a plan for GOING FORTH to do our part in healing our world
Facilitators:
Jean Hammink is a grandmother, meditator, consultant, and social change activist. Her activism is currently focused on climate change and indigenous justice. Jean is a facilitator of Macy’s Active Hope work through the Twin Cities Work That Reconnects. Being a Buddhist Unitarian, she leads workshops in these and other contexts. This follows 40 years of working in nonprofit, leadership positions, and training leaders in mindfulness-based emotional intelligence.

A Note About Donation-only Programming
Following the Buddhist tradition of dana, or giving, MZMC offers all of our programs on a donation basis. We offer a suggested donation amount to help people understand the average amount we hope to receive to continue to make these offerings. We encourage those with more capacity for giving to make a donation above the suggested amount to support those who need to give a smaller amount.
