Joya no Kane: The Tolling Bell Ceremony on New Year's Eve
A Zoom Event on December 31, 2020 10:00 p.m. to 12:05 a.m. All are welcome! We will be performing the traditional Buddhist temple ritual to usher in the New Year by ringing a bell 108 times. Each ring of the bell dispels one of the 108 worldly desires that have caused suffering during the year that is ending. We bid farewell to that suffering and anticipate starting fresh in the new year. 107 bells will ring leading up to midnight, and the 108th is rung right at midnight. While the doan rings the large bell at MZMC and live-streams on Zoom, we can join in by ringing a bell at home. Before the bell ringing, starting at 10 p.m., everyone will have a moment to briefly say goodbye to 2021 and welcome 2022. Bell ringing will begin at 11:06 p.m.
