Fall morning study group will use the book The Mountains and Waters Sutra: A Practitioner's Guide to Dogen's "Sansuikyo," by Shohaku Okumura. This sutra is believed by many to be among Dogen's most beautiful and poetic writings. Meetings will follow a group discussion format. Although Dogen often at first may seem impenetrable, the insight that can arise when studying him with a roomful of people can be remarkable.
This is an advanced study group. Those who have not previously participated in a practice period or more than one class at MZMC should talk to the teacher about permission to be part of the group.
The sutra itself is only 16 pages long, but Rev. Okumura's commentary is lengthy. Participants are encouraged to read the commentary, but those who wish may read it only in part, or read the sutra only.
MZMC will not be ordering hard copies of the book. Prior to the first class, please obtain your own copy. Also prior to the first class, please read the entire sutra (pp. 23-36), and, if you wish, the material that precedes the sutra in the book.
A Note About Donation-only Programming
Following the Buddhist tradition of dana, or giving, MZMC offers all of our programs on a donation basis. We offer a suggested donation amount to help people understand the average amount we hope to receive to continue to make these offerings. We encourage those with more capacity for giving to make a donation above the suggested amount to support those who need to give a smaller amount.
